The Eastern Passage & Area Business Association (EPABA) have been working directly with Councilor Becky Kent and HRM staff, Eastern Passage Legion 164, all levels of government and local community members/groups to bring Pole Style Banners to our community.
The original vision was to have Remembrance Day banners up on utility poles in our community to honor our veterans. This vision has grown to bring up to 50 pole banners to the Shearwater & Eastern Passage areas in a beatification and enhancement project. Imagine driving into your community seeing Welcome Banners, Seasonal banners, Specialty banners for certain events and yes, Remembrance Day banners.
The EPABA has formed a Community Banner Committee which has been meeting regularly for the last number of months as this is a large project with many moving parts. Everything from planning how many and selecting poles for approval from HRM to designing the banners to fundraising. The project is evolving in phases based on various levels of approvals to funding raised. Phase 1 is focusing on 21 Remembrance Banners with the goal to have them up on the utility poles in time for November. There are still many approval processes and funds to be raised before that can become a reality. Phase 2 will be the community banners including Welcome Banners and Seasonal. Phase 3 will include switching out seasonal banners and/or community events or specialty banners.
There has been funding support from the Legion’s 164 Poppy fund as well as grant applications and requests for support from all levels of government. A sub-committee for sponsorship/fundraising has been formed and information will be released very soon to allow businesses and community members to support this endeavor.
An open house at the Eastern Passage Legion 164 is planned for September 26, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM where there will be sample banners on display for viewing. Coffee, tea, water and lights snacks will be available. There will be more information on how community members and business can support the overall community banner project.
The EPABA are excited and proud to lead this beatification project for our community !
